Frequently Asked Questions

What is Restaura Biomas? Where does the project operate?
Restaura Biomas supports large-scale native vegetation restoration across Brasil, working in alignment with public policies and strengthening the conditions needed to advance restoration efforts. The project will be implemented across all six Brazilian biomes—Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Caatinga, Pampa and Pantanal. Activities will be carried out by WRI Brasil in partnership with state governments, local organizations and biome restoration networks. Restoration actions will primarily take place in protected areas, private lands and agrarian reform settlements.
What is the project’s objective?
The project supports Brasil’s national and international commitments to landscape and forest restoration by promoting native vegetation recovery, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and improved socioeconomic outcomes for local communities.
How does the project work?
Restaura Biomas operates through three core areas of action: strengthening public policy and institutional coordination, engaging stakeholders and advancing restoration implementation, mobilizing financial resources to enable large-scale restoration.
Who coordinates Restaura Biomas?
The project is coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), implemented by WRI Brasil, and carried out in partnership with organizations including WWF-Brasil, TNC Brasil, CI-GEF, ICMBio and the Brazilian Forest Service.
What is PLANAVEG and how does it relate to the project?
PLANAVEG is the National Plan for Native Vegetation Recovery, which aims to restore 12 million hectares of forests by 2030. Restaura Biomas supports implementation of the plan and contributes to achieving its restoration targets.
Where does the project operate?
Restaura Biomas operates across all six Brazilian biomes, supporting restoration efforts at a national scale through collaboration with public policies and local initiatives.
How is the project funded?
Restaura Biomas is part of the Global Environment Facility’s Integrated Ecosystem Restoration Program (GEF), with implementation oversight provided by CI-GEF and execution led by WRI Brasil and project partners.
What are Environmental and Social Safeguards?
Environmental and Social Safeguards are policies, guidelines and preventive measures designed to avoid, minimize or mitigate adverse impacts on the environment and local communities. They help ensure sustainability, social well-being and biodiversity protection throughout the project lifecycle.
